What makes Elevate different is that interns don’t sit around watching more seasoned consultants do the work. Instead, they get involved and receive valuable hands-on consulting experience at the sharp end of real-life projects for real-life clients.
They’ll also get the chance to choose a mentor from DHLC’s senior leadership team to help them with their career planning and development. It’s an inspiring and fun way to learn the ropes in a varied and dynamic business, which is why it’s been the launchpad to success for so many management consultants now working at DHLC.
Sonam and Lily’s – Two Elevate Success Stories
Take Sonam and Lily, who used Elevate to kickstart their careers with DHL Consulting. Sonam, who is originally from India and came to Germany to study a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and management, was introduced to DHL Consulting at a women’s career week. Lily, meanwhile — who is originally from China — was studying a master’s in international management in Cologne, and met DHLC representatives at a university career event. Both were so impressed by the company, its culture and what it had to offer that they didn’t hesitate to apply for the Elevate internship.
After successfully navigating the application process, Sonam and Lily were assigned to different DHL Consulting projects and given appropriate training. As a result, they immediately started to build their skills and increase their confidence levels. “My key takeaway was no matter how complex or intimidating a problem seems, there is always a solution,” says Lily. “I think that’s what makes consulting fascinating.”
Sonam agrees and says that Elevate taught her how to build strong client relationships and manage stakeholders more effectively. She was also pleased to have so many welcoming female colleagues working alongside her, offering help and advice whenever it was needed. “At DHLC, you meet a lot of inspiring and strong women who you learn from,” says Sonam. “So it’s a complete package in itself.”

Mentorship and career development as an Elevate intern
But a definite Elevate highlight for both women was the mentorship they received from DHL Consulting team members. “One of the perks for me was that I had a great mentor who was always ready to help every step of the way,” says Lily. “So every time I encountered any problems or had any thoughts that I wanted to share with him, he was always there for me. For me, that’s super valuable.”
Both Sonam and Lily were thrilled to be offered permanent roles at DHLC once their internships had ended. And, because they had been through the Elevate program, it made for a smooth transition to a full-time world of work. “When it came to my full-time job it felt super familiar in the sense that I already knew the people,” says Sonam. “I knew what the working culture was like and what to expect from the projects that I would be given.”
It’s a point that Lily makes too. “I think DHL Consulting in general is a great place for women to work,” she says. “And the Elevate internship is one great example!”
